Other than the general considerations for cement plaster, skimmed
plaster needs to be assessed according to age and texture. Some
patent plasters are trowelled to be so smooth, compact and hard
that there is an almost marble-like finish to the wall.
However, special care must still be exercised when choosing a primer,
as there is often a layer of fine powder on these surfaces.
Preparation
Before starting to paint
- fill in all cracks and imperfections
- sand till smooth
- remove all dust
- Remove all coatings to reveal the bare plaster with a wire brush.
Alternatively the coatings can be removed by scraping or high-pressure
water blasting.
- Fill all cracks and imperfections and sand down till smooth
when the plaster is dry.
If the original paint is in bad condition:
- remove all traces of it
- wash the walls down with concentrated detergent and rinse
- allow to dry thoroughly
- fill in all cracks with a recommended crack filler
- sand smooth when dry
If the existing paint is in good condition:
- wash the walls down with a sugar soap solution and rinse clean
or
- use a suitable solvent to remove dirt, grease, wax polish or
any other contaminants.
